"We have won 36 points in league, better than the past few years. To be above us, our opponents have needed to accomplish extraordinary feats.

"We are, however, participating in a marathon and still have 21 games remaining."

The 53-year-old took was complimentary of both Juventus and Roma for their respective efforts so far this term but believes there will still be a few twists and turns before the season reaches its conclusion.

Benitez added: "With 60 points available, our fate has yet to be written."

Napoli's league campaign resumes on January 6 with a home fixture against Sampdoria after the conclusion of the international break
